Can You Get a Car Loan on a Visa in Australia?
Being on a visa doesn't mean you can't get a car loan in Australia. Here's what lenders look for and how I help visa holders get approved.
One of the most common questions I get from clients is: "Can I get a car loan if I'm on a visa?" The short answer is yes — but there are some important things to understand before you apply.
I've helped dozens of visa holders get approved for car finance in Australia, from 457 (now TSS) holders to student visa applicants and everything in between. It's absolutely possible, and in many cases it's easier than people think.
What Visa Types Are Usually Eligible?
Most lenders will consider applications from people on temporary visas, provided the visa has enough time remaining. The key types I regularly see approved include:
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visas (subclass 482), Employer Nomination Scheme visas (subclass 186), Student visas where the applicant has income, Working Holiday visas in some cases, and partner visas. Permanent residents and those on bridging visas awaiting a permanent outcome are also generally well-received.
What Do Lenders Actually Look At?
The biggest factors lenders consider for visa holders are the same as for anyone else — but with one extra consideration: visa expiry.
Visa Expiry Date
Lenders want to know your visa has enough time remaining to cover at least part of the loan term. If your visa expires in six months but you want a five-year loan, that's a harder sell. The loan term shouldn't extend too far beyond when your visa is valid.
Employment and Income
Having a stable job in Australia makes a huge difference. Lenders want to see that you have consistent income to service the loan. Even if you've only been working for a short time, a letter from your employer confirming your role and salary goes a long way.
Australian Credit History
This is where many new arrivals struggle. If you've only recently arrived in Australia, you may have little or no Australian credit history. Some lenders can assess your overseas credit history or use alternative indicators like rental payment records and utility bills.
Do I Need a Deposit?
A deposit can strengthen your application significantly if you're on a visa. It reduces the lender's risk and shows financial responsibility. Even 10–20% of the vehicle's value can make the difference between an approval and a decline.
That said, I've had clients approved without a deposit too — it really comes down to the full picture of your application.
Why Use a Broker Instead of Going Directly to a Bank?
Banks have their own lending criteria and not all of them are flexible when it comes to visa holders. As a broker, I have access to a panel of lenders — some of whom specialise in lending to non-citizens. That means I can match you with the lender most likely to say yes, rather than sending you to one that might not understand your situation.
I also help you prepare your application so it tells your story clearly. That includes getting the right documentation together and presenting your income and employment in the best possible light.
What Documents Will You Need?
Generally, you'll need: a copy of your passport and visa grant notice, proof of Australian income (payslips or a letter from your employer), bank statements showing your financial behaviour, proof of your current address in Australia, and details of any debts or liabilities.
Every situation is a little different, so I always have a chat first to understand exactly what we're working with before we put together your application.
