Commercial Vehicle Finance for Tradies: Everything You Need to Know

Whether you need a new ute, van, or trailer, there are great finance options available for tradies. Here's how to get the best deal.

For tradies, your vehicle isn't just transport — it's your mobile office, your workshop, and often a key part of how you present your business. Whether you're a plumber, electrician, carpenter, landscaper, or any other tradie, getting the right vehicle on the right terms can make a real difference to your cash flow and your tax position.

What Types of Vehicles Can Be Financed?

Pretty much any commercial vehicle can be financed, including utes (single or dual cab), vans and panel vans, flatbed trucks and cab-chassis vehicles, trailers and tippers, and specialised trade vehicles. Whether it's brand new from a dealer or a quality used vehicle from a private seller, finance is usually available.

What Finance Structures Are Available for Tradies?

Chattel Mortgage

This is the most common structure for tradies who are registered for GST. You own the vehicle from day one, can claim the GST upfront, and the interest and depreciation are tax deductible. It's straightforward and very tax effective.

Finance Lease

If you'd prefer to keep the vehicle off your balance sheet and claim fully deductible lease payments, a finance lease is worth considering. You don't own the vehicle but you have the option to purchase it at the end of the term.

Commercial Hire Purchase

Similar to a chattel mortgage in many ways — you take possession of the vehicle and use it while making repayments, with ownership transferring to you at the end. Less common now but still used by some lenders.

New vs Used Vehicles: Does It Matter?

Both new and used commercial vehicles can be financed, but lenders do have guidelines around vehicle age. Older vehicles (generally 10 or more years old) can be harder to finance and may attract higher rates. If you're looking at a used vehicle, aim for something under 10 years old and in good condition for the best finance options.

Can You Finance the Fit-Out Too?

Great question — and yes, in many cases you can finance both the vehicle and the fit-out (toolboxes, shelving, racks, etc.) in one facility. This can be very convenient and means you don't have to find extra cash for the fit-out separately.

How the Tax Benefits Work for Tradies

As a tradie using a vehicle primarily for work, you should be entitled to significant tax deductions. The instant asset write-off provisions (subject to government policy at the time) can allow eligible small businesses to write off the full cost of a new vehicle in the year of purchase. Your accountant can advise on what's available in the current financial year.
