What Documents Do You Need for a Car Loan Application?

Knowing which documents to prepare before applying for a car loan can save you time and stress. Here's a complete checklist from Arron Sharp.

One thing that trips people up when they apply for a car loan is not having their documents ready. It doesn't take long to gather what you need, but doing it in advance means the process can move quickly once you're ready to apply. Here's a comprehensive guide to what's typically required.

Identity Documents

Lenders need to verify who you are. The standard requirement is 100 points of ID, which typically means: Australian driver's licence (or foreign licence if you're a new arrival), Australian passport or overseas passport, Medicare card or birth certificate, and utility bills showing your name and current address.

Most lenders accept a combination of the above. Your driver's licence and passport together usually covers the 100-point requirement.

Proof of Income

If You're an Employee

The most common documents are two or three recent payslips from your employer. Some lenders may also ask for a letter from your employer confirming your employment status and salary, particularly if you're casual or relatively new in the role.

If You're Self-Employed

For a full-doc application, you'll generally need your last two years of personal and business tax returns, and financial statements. For a low-doc application, alternative income documents like BAS statements, business bank statements, or an accountant's letter may be accepted.

Bank Statements

Three to six months of bank statements from your main transaction account. Lenders look at these to verify income, understand your spending habits, and check for any red flags (like gambling transactions or consistent overdrafts).

Information About the Vehicle

Lenders need to know what you're buying. For a dealer purchase, a written quote or contract from the dealer is usually sufficient. For a private sale, you'll typically need a signed purchase contract between you and the seller, along with the vehicle's registration papers.

Other Documents That May Be Required

Depending on your situation, lenders may also ask for: a copy of your visa and passport (if you're not an Australian citizen or permanent resident), proof of your current residential address (a utility bill or lease agreement), details of existing loans or liabilities (statements for any outstanding debts), and proof of any other income sources (rental income, government payments, etc.).
