Finance Options for New Arrivals to Australia

Just arrived in Australia and need a car or personal loan? Getting finance as a new arrival can be challenging, but it's definitely possible.

Australia is a big country, and getting around without a car can be genuinely challenging — especially outside major CBD areas. For new arrivals, getting a car loan is often one of the first financial steps they need to take. It can feel daunting when you're new to the country and don't have a local credit history yet, but it's absolutely achievable.

I've helped many new arrivals get their first Australian car loan, and I understand the unique challenges you face.

The Main Challenges for New Arrivals

No Australian Credit History

Your financial track record from your home country doesn't automatically transfer to Australia. Lenders here can only see what's on Australian credit reporting systems, so you may be starting from scratch.

Limited Employment History in Australia

If you've only just started a new job in Australia, you may have very short local employment history. Most lenders like to see at least three to six months of Australian employment.

Visa Status

Your visa type and the time remaining on it will affect what lenders are willing to offer. Permanent residents have an easier time than temporary visa holders, but temporary visa holders can still be approved.

What Finance Is Available?

Despite these challenges, there are several options available to new arrivals: personal loans from lenders who specialise in new-to-Australia borrowers, secured car loans where the vehicle acts as security, and sometimes even standard car loans with lenders who are open to new arrivals with strong employment and a deposit.

What Helps Your Application?

A larger deposit (20–30% of the vehicle's value) significantly improves your chances. Proof of stable employment in Australia — even if recent — is important. Bank statements showing positive financial behaviour help too. Some lenders may also consider your overseas credit history if you can provide documentation from your home country.

Building Your Credit History Quickly

The sooner you start building your Australian credit history, the better. Opening a mobile phone plan or a credit card with a small limit and paying it consistently can start building your profile quite quickly. Enrolling on the electoral roll also helps lenders verify your identity and address.

How I Help New Arrivals

I understand the Australian lending landscape and which lenders are most open to helping people who are new to the country. Rather than applying to multiple lenders yourself and potentially damaging your credit file with multiple inquiries, let me find the right lender for your situation.
