Can International Students Get a Car Loan in Australia?
Australia is home to hundreds of thousands of international students — many of whom need reliable transport to get to university, work, and around a city not built for public transport. Here's an honest guide to car loans for students on a 500 visa.
The honest answer
Getting a car loan as an international student in Australia is possible— but it's harder than for permanent residents or citizens, and the options are more limited. Most major banks won't consider you. But certain specialist lenders will.
The key variables are: your income, your deposit, the remaining duration of your visa, and whether you have any form of credit history in Australia or overseas.
🎓 Reality check
If you're in the early stages of your study and have no Australian income, a car loan will be very difficult. If you've been in Australia 12+ months, have part-time work, and can put down a deposit — the picture looks much better.
What lenders consider for student visa holders
Visa duration
Your student visa needs to have sufficient time remaining relative to the loan term. A 3-year course with 2 years left gives you more options than someone in their final semester.
Australian income
International students can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. Documented income — even part-time — strengthens your application considerably.
Deposit size
A 20–30% deposit is often the deciding factor. It reduces the lender's risk and signals financial responsibility.
Credit history
No Australian credit history is expected, but some lenders will consider a letter from your overseas bank or evidence of financial responsibility.
Guarantor
If a permanent resident or citizen is willing to act as guarantor, your options improve significantly.
Alternatives to a traditional car loan
If a car loan isn't accessible yet, here are some options worth considering:
Buy a car outright
If your budget allows, buying a reliable second-hand car for $5,000–$10,000 outright is often the most practical option for students.
Guarantor loan
A parent, family member, or friend who is an Australian resident can act as guarantor, greatly expanding your options.
Personal loan
Some personal loan products are more accessible than secured car loans. Rates may be higher, but it's an option.
Wait and build history
Six to twelve months of stable employment and clean bank statements can transform your application.
What to avoid
- ⚠️Don't apply to multiple lenders at once — each application creates a hard credit inquiry
- ⚠️Avoid dealership finance — it's often expensive and not designed for non-standard profiles
- ⚠️Don't exaggerate your income on an application — this is fraud and creates serious legal risk
- ⚠️Be cautious of lenders offering "guaranteed approval" — terms are often predatory
